Public Information Officer | Harvard | Cambridge, MA Reporting to the Senior Director of Communications for Editorial Planning and Production, the Public Information Officer is responsible for media relations for Harvard Law School, including responding to media questions and requests, monitoring perceptions of the school in the news media, and generating positive media coverage. This writing-intensive position requires excellent writing skills that are demonstrated across several mediums, including news writing for both print and online, public relations writing for press releases, and speech writing. Produces and manages the daily e-newsletter (news@law) for the HLS community and interacts through social media, maintaining the school’s primary Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Job Functions include:
-Responsible for media relations for Harvard Law School, acting as first point of contact for all press requests that come into the Communications Office. Works collaboratively with the Assistant Dean for Communications to respond to media inquiries, and will also work collaboratively with the Senior Director for Online Strategy and New Media, to strategize about how to best push HLS content into external communications channels.
- Generates and disseminates positive media coverage. Monitors external publicity of HLS, and positions HLS in positive news stories.
- Maintains social media accounts, Twitter and Facebook, and produces a daily news@law e-newsletter updating students, faculty, and staff on HLS events and media coverage.
- Covers news events at the law school and produces articles for news and spotlight sections of HLS website, as well as for a variety of HLS publications.
- Collaborates with the editorial team, seeking out potential news stories and providing feedback about which stories should get attention and the publicity strategies that should be pursued.
- Consults with faculty and law school program staff to identify newsworthy stories and produce appropriate coverage and materials. Works collaboratively with a broad number of constituents across the school, including more than 29 clinics, 15 research programs, and multiple student organizations.
- Maintains key contacts in the news media and blogosphere (especially those with responsibility for covering higher education) and monitors what they are interested in covering.
- Collaborates with the central University news office and the public affairs staff for Harvard University, on sharing resources, information and news coverage, and on taking advantage of technologies for the dissemination of HLS and University intellectual content, e.g., through channels such as iTunesU, Foursquare and other tools.
- Assists in researching and writing remarks for the Dean of the Law School, key administrators, and alumni leaders, collaborating with the school’s office of Alumni Affairs and Development and other departments.
Bachelor’s degree. 3+ years experience in public relations or newswriting. Excellent writing skills across several mediums including news writing for both print and online publications, public relations writing for press releases and speech writing. Working knowledge of the school’s CMS, Photoshop, and photo database software. Understands/uses RSS Feeds and other media consumption tools such as Google Reader and Lexis Nexis.
